Page came out as trans in December 2020, and it was revealed in March 2022 that his Umbrella Academy character will transition as well.

When asked if he got to speak with the writers, Page said that The Vampire Academy co-creator/showrunner Steve Blackman is, ‘incredible’ and ‘such a wonderful person.’

‘When we first talked about it, he seemed really excited about incorporating it into the show,’ he told Meyers.

Page added he has been reflecting on, ‘very difficult times in my life, certain struggles and obstacles and all that and I think ultimately getting through that it really deepens your empathy.

‘I think of the times in my life where I was the most uncomfortable. Where I was the most unwell, those were the times where I was the most angry. And I was the most unkind to myself or self-righteous or all of those things. It’s improved my life drastically,’ Page said.

He added, ‘I hope maybe people who do have an issue with me could maybe try and hear that and embrace that on some level.’

Seth asked him how he has dealt with negative reactions to his transition, though Page said he wants to focus on ‘degree of joy’ he feels that has been extraordinary.’

‘What I want to focus on right now, and has been so extraordinary is the degree of joy that I feel, the degree of presence that I feel, I feel a way that I really never thought possible for a long, long time,’ Elliot said.

‘That’s really what I’m focusing on and embracing the most. But of course the moment can be overwhelming,’ Page continued.

He added the negativity is, ‘unfortunate, because we are all on the same team here you know whether you are trans, non binary, gender-nonconforming CIS, we all have these expectations and these sort of limits and constraints because of us, sort of people’s obsession with the binary and how we are all supposed to live our lives.

‘To me it would be so special for us to all be able to connect and to talk about how similar we are in all of our journeys,’ he added.

Seth asked Elliot about the article he wrote in Esquire about his current feelings and asked if he thought it was making him a better actor.

‘It’s a beautiful thing to experience now because a lot of the time my life was just trying to move forward. Getting to embrace the experience as much as I get to now, I think it’s made me better in so many facets – as a person, as a friend, relationships,’ he added.

Elliot also discussed the upcoming season of The Umbrella Academy where his transition was part of the story line. Seth asked if the people closest to Elliot in his real life were as supportive as the characters on the show were to his character’s transition from him.

‘Yeah, absolutely. I feel really grateful for that. I think most people weren’t surprised, or something I’d been talking about with a lot of people in my life,’ Page said, before opening up about the new season.

‘It’s fun to make, as an actor it’s so fulfilling as an actor, and yeah, we have so much fun,” Elliot said, though he admitted he’s not as talented at playing the violin as his character Viktor is.

‘I was pretty horrible at it. In my defense, they say it’s the most difficult instrument to learn, which I very much understand. But I had an amazing teacher and fantastic double. I just did my best,’ Page said.

Seth said that since the show started that Elliot and his show character came out as trans and asked if he shared his experience and journey with the show’s writers.

Page added that the show also brought on writer/journalist Thomas Page McBee, who wrote a book called Amateur, following the first trans man to box in Madison Square Garden, who, ‘came onboard and helped out’ in the season.

‘I feel proud of it and excited for people to see it,’ Elliot said on the new season of his show.
